Magic and Meditation Are Explored in Yumi Sakugawa’s “Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One With the Universe”

The world seems to be thrown off-balance, perhaps a lot more so these days. From the constant reminders of an unbalanced justice system, to the horror of the beheading of civilians abroad, one cannot help but feel hopeless in times like these. That and in addition to the struggles we encounter in our personal lives- some more so than others- can really bring on a sense of feeling lost in this big universe of ours.

While such problems and circumstances have yet to be solved, I recently read a graphic novel that can be seen as a beam of hope. It serves as a reminder regarding the interconnectedness amongst the human race and why it’s important to take a minute and listen to what the universe has to say to us. The book that I’m referring to is Yumi Sakugawa’s recent release, “Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One With the Universe.”

Set to the backdrop of Sakugawa’s simplistic yet compelling, dream-like illustrations, the book leads you on a step-by-step, metaphysical journey of self-discovery. From sharing cake and tea with your demons and planting strange seeds, to exploring your inner cosmos and finding the universe within, “Your Guide to Becoming One With the Universe” is a guided meditation to finding peace within oneself and beyond.

I remember coming across Sakugawa’s work last year when I read her book, “I Think I Am In Friend-Love With You.” I remember thinking how incredibly charming it was and relatable too, wherein which I was left smiling in the end. “Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One With the Universe” was similar in a sense where it maintained that familiar charm and positive energy I’ve been exposed to over time in her works, where it leaves you feeling that everything will be alright in the end. It goes to the depths of your mind and soul and brings forth a feeling of peace, beyond anything logically explainable. If there was a way of doing meditation with words and pictures, Sakugawa succeeded in just that.

This is a beautiful, thoughtful, beneficial read. When in a feeling of doubt, in my opinion, “Your Illustrated Guide to Becoming One With the Universe” is a recommended read to help bring the light in from the cosmos.
